Recognizing Environmental Achievements of Markham’s Youth

MARKHAM, ON – May 17, 2016 – At a meeting of Council held in Council Chambers on the evening of May 17, the recipients of the 2016 Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary received recognition from the Mayor, members of Council and Markham District Energy.

The bursary rewards Markham’s youth for dedication to the environment through academic studies and participation in extracurricular, volunteer and community service activities with the goal of encouraging continued environmental leadership at the post-secondary level.

“Markham District Energy is pleased to celebrate the achievements of this year’s sustainability bursary recipients,” said Bruce Ander, president and CEO of Markham District Energy. “Each recipient should be proud of their environmental accomplishments to date and take pride in the knowledge their efforts, regardless of the magnitude, have played a role in bettering the environment.”

The recipients, graduating students from each of Markham’s high schools, achieved success through a variety of initiatives ranging from tree plantings, battery recycling and community clean-ups to participating in stewardship programs and developing youth charters. They plan to continue pursuing success in environmental programs of study at the post-secondary level.

“I am very grateful for the Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary, as it not only recognizes my accomplishments thus far as a leader of Milliken Mills’ environment club, Green Inc. and volunteer of Friends of the Rouge Watershed, but also provides support for future environmental success as I pursue a degree in sciences at university this fall,” said Milliken Mills’ recipient, Angela Lin.
