About MDE - Our Past
After the infamous ice storm hit Eastern Canada in 1998 and the deregulation of the power industry, Markham Council focused on the creation of a local energy system to become more self-reliant. Timed with the urban planning for a new downtown Markham, MDE was created in 1999 with IBM secured as its first customer. The first of four proposed local energy plants to serve downtown Markham opened in 2000.
