Markham District Energy Awards Sustainability Bursaries to Markham Youth
MARKHAM, ON – May 27, 2013 – Last Wednesday evening, at a special Council Meeting for community recognition, Markham District Energy (MDE) and Markham Council formally recognized the 14 recipients of the 2013 Markham District Energy Sustainability Bursary, presenting each recipient with a trophy and offering congratulatory messages.
“Markham District Energy takes great pride in delivering its bursary program to Markham’s high schools,” said MDE president Bruce Ander. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to reward graduating students who have demonstrated a commitment to the environment and support them in their post-secondary studies.”
Launched in celebration of MDE’s 10th anniversary, the Bursary encourages and rewards students who have distinguished themselves through environmental extracurricular, volunteer and community service activities, and academic excellence. MDE grants 14 bursaries annually (one for each of Markham’s high schools) of $1,000 each, which are to be applied directly towards post-secondary studies in a field related to sciences and the environment.
“Markham is pleased to recognize local youth who are supporting our environmental goals,” said Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Markham is committed to being one of the most sustainable cities in North America and as the owner of Markham District Energy, a leader in sustainable community energy systems, it is fitting we celebrate the environmental leadership of our youth.”
“We are proud to recognize this year’s group of deserving bursary recipients,” said Deputy Mayor and MDE Chair Jack Heath. “As a leader in district energy in Canada, Markham District Energy believes it is necessary and fitting to support Markham’s young environmental leaders as they continue to pursue and develop their passion for the environment.”
