Markham District Energy President Awarded Diamond Jubilee Medal

MARKHAM, ON – May 28, 2014 – Mayor Frank Scarpitti formally presented Bruce Ander, Markham District Energy (MDE) President & CEO with his Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal on May 8 at a special Council meeting for community recognition. Ander received his nomination for the award from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) for his contributions to the municipal sector.

Ander has held the position of President & CEO of MDE since 2002. He has over 30 years experience in the Ontario energy sector with specific expertise developing high efficiency cogeneration, distributed generation and district energy projects. Ander currently sits as Vice Chair of the International District Energy Association, is a member of the National Advisory Committee for QUEST and is Chair of the Markhaven Home for Seniors and its fundraising arm, the Markhaven Foundation.

“We are pleased the Federation of Canadian Municipalities recognized our President & CEO, Bruce Ander for his ongoing role in promoting and advancing district energy in Markham and across Canada,” said Deputy Mayor and MDE Chair Jack Heath. “The recognition highlights the quality team we have assembled to manage and grow Markham District Energy.”

Created to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to Canada, as well as honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. The Governor General awarded 60,000 medals to deserving Canadians over the year of celebrations.

To ensure recognition in a variety of fields, the Government of Canada invited partner organizations to nominate candidates. In its role as a partner organization, the FCM helped to identify 4,000 worthy recipients in municipalities across the country who have helped strengthen the municipal sector as a whole.
